Electromobility - a systems perspective

Since electric vehicles has proven to meet or exceed almost all the requirements they are now seen as the major solution for fossil free transportation. Electric cars, and electric buses already compete with combustion engine vehicles on the market. However, on a system level there are still many uncertainties, for example the total system cost, availability of charging, cost effective charging strategies, battery sizing, and cost for strengthen the electric grid. This course explains an electromobility system and the main compromises required when designing it.

Participants spend about 20 hours.

This course is aimed for a wide audience. Anyone who needs to understand how vehicles, charging infrastructure and charging strategies should be combined in order to result in an attractive electromobility system at a low cost.
Target audience is for example engineers, product planners, electric utilities, charge operators, city planners, policy makers etc. The course does not require engineering background or mathematical skills, but it assumes some basic understanding of vehicles, energy and economics.
If you want to learn how to analyse a system on your own there is a second course “Electromobility Systems – Basic analysis” going deeper into the tools and analysis. It requires more mathematics and engineering experience.

Course certificate requires the participants to have done all the course online exercises with sufficient number of correct answers.

The online-course will open up for the participants on December 15. Time 15.00-16.00.

Seminar: On February 2, 2021 there will be a seminar discussing the course content based on participants answer to some of the exercises. Time for seminar: 15.00-16.30.

The course closes on February 19.

The core of the course is a cost benefit analysis, seen from both the perspective of the vehicle users and the charger operators. Analysis methods are introduced, which explains how to get a cost-effective and attractive system. The system is also analysed for a few different vehicle types to show why different conditions leads to different system solutions.

This course gives a solid base for understanding what is important for an electromobility system. It will introduce effective tools for analysing and understanding the system and shows how to get a high benefit at a low cost. The focus in the course is on battery electric vehicles and stationary charging, but the analysis methods introduced are relevant also for analysing other solutions. The course will also provide general insights about strengths and weaknesses for different types of electromobility. For example, it will be shown why heavy trucks are just as suitable for electrification as smaller vehicles, if not more, and why high-power fast chargers are normally not an expensive solution.
