The main objective of this course is to strengthen bridge officer’s ability to handle routine tasks and uncertainty during normal and abnormal situations thus enhancing the operational safety and efficiency of the company vessels.
This course is suitable for pilots, masters, watch keeping officers and personnel assigned to operational tasks within the maritime industry e.g. tow masters, mooring masters, nautical advisors etc. of all nationalities, rank and experience.
The BTM part of the course concentrates on the importance of establishing navigational routines and procedures, passage planning skills and bridge management techniques including the use of modern integrated navigation systems.
The BRM part of the course main focus is, by addressing topics as leadership, sense making, culture, communication, decision making, assertiveness, automation, to change and strengthen attitudes with the objective of establishing a safer and more efficient teamwork onboard ship.
Tailor made MRM training course
It is wanted that the instructors/facilitators have a clear understanding of the special operating conditions of company’s vessels including the management’s expectations and goals. Continuing discussions with relevant company representatives are planned to be a part in the development of the course.
In addition to the standard BRM/BTM course we propose to emphasize the following topics:
- Using the service from a Pilot including common and shared situational understanding, communication both internally within the bridge team and with external entities such as VTS and the different parties responsibility for the safe navigation of the vessel.
- Understanding the need for international maritime conventions, recommendations and national legislation
- Collision avoidance rules and the rules application in areas with complex traffic situation
The course design is based on short scenarios in the simulators followed by a scenario review, discussions and lectures on relevant topics. Course participants are able to enhance their skills in communication; bridge and engine team work, critical thinking and contingency planning.
The 16 hours of simulator training in the course are designed to support and make practice of the theoretical part of the course and is particularly aimed at training in demanding and complex situations.
Using company specific routines, procedures and checklists enhances the exercise output and concurrently verifying their quality.
The aim is to increase knowledge about human capabilities and limitations and to safeguard positive attitudes to safety and teamwork.

Chalmers is following the clarification from INTERTANKO when discussing BTM, BRM and MRM http://www.intertanko.com/Topics/Marine-safety/Marine-safety-/Resource-m...
Our instructors have sea going experience as masters/pilots complemented by courses and experience in areas close related to the management level of shipping e.g. leadership, risk analysis, casualty investigations and organisational safety management.
In all our courses we cooperate with our departments enabling us to entwine the latest research, in e.g. human factors and ship dynamics, with practical training.
