Sweden now has an IHO/FIG certified S-5B hydrography program, a 20-week course in practical hydrography! 

This course provides students with a skillset that is highly coveted in the ocean mapping research and commercial offshore industry, which can lead to a challenging and rewarding career in mapping of the world’s rivers, lakes, seas and oceans.

Participants:

  • develop all of the skills necessary for collecting and processing seabed and water column information for high-resolution bathymetric mapping.
  • are exposed to industry leading data collection and processing software and procedures.

Målgrupp 

Industry participants with the appropriate background are exempt from the introduction and nautical science modules.  They are also given the option of taking the computation tools module remotely.  These participants are not required to be on-site until the beginning of week four.  Industry participants are given the option of completing the CFFP with their organization.  Those taking advantage of these options are on-site for 13 weeks.

Upon completion, participants are awarded a certificate indicating that they have completed an IHO/FIG S-5B certified program.

Course design
The program takes place over 20 weeks, divided into four 5-week sections. 

Section 1 includes:

  • A short introduction to hydrography module
  • A computation tools module that introduces the participants to programming in Python and provides a review of some math and physics concepts
  • A nautical science and meteorology module comes next followed by remote sensing and water levels

Section 2 and 3 are comprised of: 

  • A combination of theory and practical application 

  • Participants have the opportunity to collect, process, and analyse hydrographic information using vessels, equipment, and software from GU, SU, MMT and/or SMA

Section 4

  • Is dedicated to hydrographic project management and the Comprehensive Final Field Project (CFFP), which takes place during the last 4 weeks of the program.
  • Participants plan and execute a hydrographic survey as per specifications provided by the Swedish Maritime Administration.
  • Senior surveyors from the SMA and MMT supervise the CFFP, under GU oversite.

Instructors
David Dodd PhD, Instructor of Hydrography, University of Gothenburg:
Dr. David Dodd is the coordinator of and instructor in the practical hydrography program at the University of Gothenburg.  He has a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Surveying Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Southern Mississippi.  In his 30 years in the hydrographic community, Dr. Dodd has worked as an educator, researcher, hydrographer and project manager within academic, governmental and private sectors. 

Luis Rosa, Marin Mätteknik (MMT):
Luis Rosa is a geophysicist and hydrographic surveyor with a background of over 20 years in the survey industry, research and military. He is a former instructor of the Specialisation (Cat. A) and Intermediate (Cat. B) courses in Hydrography and Oceanography of the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute and is currently with MMT as Geophysical Advisor.

Jonas Wodelius, Instructor of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology:
Jonas Wodelius is a Master Mariner, working as instructor in the nautical science group with focus on technical navigational equipment and systems. Jonas is also working with standardization of bridge equipment in SEK/IEC. Jonas has a background from advanced multi-purpose construction vessels within the offshore industry, working with construction, maintenance and mapping of oil fields.

Johan Mellqvist PhD, Professor of Space Earth and Environment, Chalmers University of Technology:
Dr Mellqvist is professor in the optical remote sensing group. He focuses his research on the development of spectroscopic optical methods and to use these to gather data related to different environmental problems. This includes estimating trends of various gaseous species in the large-scale atmosphere to working with air quality issues with particular focus on mapping and quantifying fugitive emissions of gases from industries and to control ship emissions. Johan is a national expert in measuring diffuse emission of hydrocarbons (VOC) and he works with European standardization (CEN)

Anna Wåhlin PhD, Professor of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg:
Dr. Anna Wåhlin is a Professor of Physical Oceanography at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg. Her research focus is in the field of Polar Oceanography, mostly in the Southern Ocean. Specifically her research investigates several aspects of dynamics of polar seas including physical oceanography, ocean circulation, topographic effects, ice shelf melt processes and air-sea-ice interaction.  When Dr. Wåhlin was appointed professor in 2015 she became Sweden's first woman full Professor of Oceanography

Martin Jakobsson PhD, Professor of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Stockholm University:
After completing a PhD in 2000 at the Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm University, Dr Jakobsson joined the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire, USA. His thesis was titled "Mapping the Arctic Ocean: Bathymetry and Pleistocene Paleoceanography". His current research interests are the Arctic Ocean paleoceanography and glacial history, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, glacial landforms, development of Digital Bathymetric Models (DBMs) from a mixture of data sources, and the use of GIS and 3D-visualization for handling and analyzing marine geological/geophysical data. In April of 2004, Dr Jakobsson returned to Stockholm for an Associate Professor position at the Department of Geological Sciences. From November 2004, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded him five years to devote full time to research. In September 2009 he was promoted to full Professor in Marine Geology and Geophysics at Stockholm University

Avbokningen måste ske skriftligen. Avbokning av logi sker i enlighet med hotellens avbokningsregler. Vi accepterar en kollega som ersättare för den ursprungliga deltagaren.
